Water Heater Repair in Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn houses get hot water in a few different ways: a gas tank in the cellar, an electric tank in an apartment closet, a coil inside the boiler, or a tankless unit on a wall. Each one fails in its own way.

Common water heater problems

No hot water from a gas tank

Usually the pilot or the part that proves the pilot is lit. A draught from a cellar window can blow a weak pilot out repeatedly.

Not enough hot water

A failing dip tube, a lower element on an electric tank, or a tank too small for the household. Sediment is a smaller factor here than in hard-water cities.

Water around the base

Could be the relief valve, a fitting on top, or condensation. If it is the tank itself, it needs replacing.

Fumes or soot near the flue

A venting problem. Turn the heater off and call; flue gases must go up the chimney, not into the cellar.

Venting in old chimneys

In a brownstone the gas water heater often vents into a masonry chimney that was built for coal. Over the years the chimney may have lost mortar, filled with debris at the bottom, or been left too large for a modern appliance, so the exhaust cools and draws poorly.

When we work on a gas heater we check that it is drafting: that exhaust is being pulled up the flue rather than spilling into the room. Elite Pipe Solutions will point out a chimney that needs a liner or cleaning even if the repair you called about is something else.

Hot water from the boiler

Many Brooklyn houses with steam or hot-water heating make domestic hot water from a coil inside the boiler, or from an indirect tank heated by the boiler. If hot water is weak only in summer, or the boiler runs constantly just to keep up with showers, that set-up may be the cause. A separate water heater or an indirect tank can solve it.

Repair or replace

Parts such as thermostats, elements, gas controls, thermocouples, relief valves and anode rods are all replaceable. A tank that is leaking from the steel shell is not. When a heater is old and has started to need parts regularly, we will tell you plainly whether another repair is worth paying for.

Getting a new tank into a cellar with a narrow stair, or an apartment up four flights, takes planning. We measure the route before ordering, not on the day.

Frequently asked questions

How long do water heaters last in Brooklyn?

Tank heaters commonly last around ten years or more. Soft city water helps, but location, venting and maintenance matter just as much.

My pilot keeps going out. Why?

Common causes are a worn thermocouple or flame sensor, a dirty pilot, or a draught. On a sealed unit, a blocked air intake is also likely.

Can you replace a water heater in an apartment closet?

Yes. Access, venting and whether gas or electric is allowed in the building are checked first.
